Everton romped to victory at Goodison Park this morning in the F.A. Youth Cup having most of the play due to their superior tactics and winning 7-2. When Dootson, Bury’s goalkeeper misjudged a ball, Barton nipped in put Everton in front and further goals were scored by Ashworth (2), Folksman, Blair and Todd.

EVERTON YOUTH ON TRIAL

4TH DECEMBER 1957

BY STORK

With the emphasis on youth in football I would like to recommend the Youth match at Goodison Park on Saturday morning at 11 o’clock.

Everton have reached the last 32, having beaten Liverpool 4-1 and Bury 7-2, and their meeting with Bolton Wanderers should provide a keen tussle.

We have already had a view of several of the Everton boys who graduated throught he Youth team but there are many more who have not been “shown” in senior football so far.

I have glowing accounts of Labone, Griffiths, the Liverpool and Northern Counties team and a Welsh schoolboy goalkeeper, Ashworth, Bentham, Todd, Kavanagh, to mention but a few, but don’t you think it would be better if you went and saw for yourself the up – and – coming youngsters who may one day be called to senior status? Bentham, Labone, Todd and Ashworth are the only professionals.

I am sure you will see a good game, for the Wanderers are going to put a strong team on the field.

Everton. Graham Griffiths; Alan Bentham, Frank Briars; Arthur Peat, Brian Labone, Eddie Kavanagh; Dave Todd, Eddie Folksman, Jimmy Blain, Alec Ashworth, Ken Barton.

EVERTON YOUTH V BOLTON YOUTH

7TH DECEMBER 1957

At Goodison Park, Everton were soon on the attack and from Todd’s centre Blain fired in a shot which Bernard (Bolton goalkeeper) did well to save.Owens made progress on the right and presented Rimmer with a chance to score for Bolton but Griffiths (Everton ‘keeper) saved brilliantly.

After 25 minutes Ashworth scored a brilliant goal for Everton after good work by Todd. Just on the interval Phythian equalised.

Afterwards Bolton extended the Everton defence. Griffiths saving many shots brilliantly. Ashworth tried hard to break through again but was prevented from scoring at the crutial moment by Bolton’s defenders.
