TALKING POINTS

15th NOVEMBER 1975

Everton start their quest for success in the F.A. Youth Cup with a home second round tie against Blackpool at Goodison Park on Monday (7p.m.).

But they will go onto the tie without Tom Sharp, captain last season when Everton reached the quarter-finals. For Sharp is just 24 hours too old to play in this season’s competition. His birthday falls a day the wrong side of the qualifying date for the Youth Cup.

So Everton must find a new captain to lead them against Blackpool who they also meet in this season’s Lancashire Youth Cup.

Among the youngsters expected to be in action include goalkeeper Andrew Brand, Michael O’Halloran, Mark Higgins and Martin Mowatt. Defender Higgins will also be in action next Tuesday when he plays for the England youth team against West Ham’s youth side in a trial match at Upton Park.

Ipswich Town are the current Youth Cup holders and they beat West Ham in last season’s final. Everton have won the trophy only once, back in 1965. Last season they beat Preston, Blackpool and Manchester United, before losing at home to Huddersfield.

YOUTH CUP HOPES CRASH

17th DECEMBER 1975

Everton’s run in the F.A. Youth cup came to a sudden halt in the third round last night when they were beaten on their own ground by an Oldham Youth side 2-1.

The Blues could not complain about the result for they had only themselves to blame. They missed two open goals in the last 10 minutes when ‘keeper Harris who had played well, started to panic under pressure and dropped the ball.

Oldham took the lead after 16 minutes when Brand failed to hold a cross from Seddon and Webster scored and at 38 minutes went further ahead with a goal from Hookilin after the best move of the match.

Everton could do nothing right as Oldham gained confidence and it was not until Coffey came on as a substitute with 30 minutes to go that their luck changed. At 67 minutes a cross by Monaghan beat Harris and the substitute was there to score.
