ABILITY PAYS OFF
1ST DECEMBER 1987
Everton took time to tame a lively Barnsley outfit in last night’s FA Youth Cup second round clash at Goodison Park, but eventually patience and ability paid off and they went through by a comfortable 2-0 margin.
Barnsley, currently second in the Northern Intermediate League, were at their best in the opening half-hour but found the dominating Eddie Youds a big stumbling block.
Keeper Ian Wardle kept their hopes alive with some brave saves but was caught in no man’s land in the 47th minute when Lee Elliott headed Everton in front from a cross by Jason Darks.
And in the 75th minute after good work from Jimmy Carberry and John Ebbrell, Everton clinched victory when Phil Quinlan nipped in the fire past the hesitant Wardle.

PHIL TREBLE TOPS
5TH JANUARY 1988
Everton, helped by some lethal striking which brought Phil Quinlan a hat-trick, beat Newcastle 4-2 in last night’s F.A. Youth Cup third round clash and rain soaked Goodison Park.
Quinlan showed finishing power of the highest quality as he shot Everton ahead in the 24th minute following a Marcus Ebdon free kick.
He then revealed fine pace and an eye for the half chance when he twice beat defenders and keeper Simon Bishop to complete his treble with goals in the 47th and 77th minutes.
Elliott also got in on the scoring act in the 68th minute, courtesy of a cross from Phil Jones, while Newcastle got consolation strikes in the second half from a Tony Lormor solo and a David Robinson penalty.

YOUNG BLUES FACE REPLAY
24TH FEBRUARY 1988
Everton’s youngsters followed the example of their more illustrious seniors by getting in the replay grove last night when a 3-3 draw with Nottingham Forest means the teams must clash for a third time to decide their F.A. Youth Cup fourth round tie.
Everton went tantalisingly close to earning a fifth round chance to play Liverpool and Anfield. Three times they were in the lead but Forest, who packed plenty of firepower, came back to level each time and then won the toss for the right to take the tie back to their City Ground.
Jimmy Carberry, with a crashing 30 yard drive, shot Everton ahead in the fifth minute but the tricky Alan Lamb equalised from close range on the hour.
Keeper Chris Taylor hurled defiance at Forest’s dominance with a string of great saves and Everton looked to have nicked it when Phil Jones, brought down in the area, picked himself up and netted with a 71st minute penalty.
But with just two minutes to go Lee Glover converted a chance created by Tony Abraham to level once more ans seconds later Forest were denied when Mark Hurst hit a post.
It meant an extra time stint and though Jones cracked Everton in front for a third time with a deflected shot, Forest came again for Glover, a lad with First Division experience, to show his class with a tremendous solo effort to make it 3-3 and take the tie to a third game.

ITS LAMB CHOP FOR EVERTON
1ST MARCH 1988
The prospect of an all Merseyside FA Youth Cup quarter final clash finally disappeared at the City Ground, Nottingham last night.
Everton went down 2-1 to Nottingham Forest in a nail biting fourth round second replay that could have easily gone into a fourth match.
Two goals by Alan Lamb gave Forest a first half cushion, but a goal by Lee Elliot, who had earlier hit a post, gave the Goodison youngsters hope.
They applied non-stop pressure in the last half hour but failed to find another way through with Jimmy Carberry, Phil Quinlan and substitute Marcus Ebdon all going close.
Forest now visit Liverpool on a date to be decided.
