YOUNG BLUES TO THE FORE

13TH DECEMBER 1988

Everton put out last season’s finalists, Doncaster Rovers, when they beast them 4-1 in last night’s F.A. Youth Cup second round replay at Goodison Park.

Everton effectively ended Doncaster’s hopes in a tough-tacking clash when they hit a first half purple patch which produced three goals in 13 minutes from Phil Quinlan, Marcus Ebdon and David Conlan.

Keeper Stuart Barton also played his part with a couple of smart saves and although Doncaster pulled one back through Carl Heggs in the 75th minute Everton had the last word when Ebdon knocked in a 77th minute penalty after Quinlan had been brought down.

HARD-PRESSED BLUES FACE STERN YOUTH CUP TEST

17TH DECEMBER 1989

After being held to a goalless at Goodison Park last night, Everton now face a tough F.A. Youth Cup third round replay against Leicester City at Filbert Street on Thursday.

Leicester dominated for long spells and it took steady goalkeeping by Stuart Barton, plus goalline clearances by Neil Moore and Neil Sang to keep the visitors at bay.

Everton’s best efforts came from Sang and Joe Clifton.

KITSON CLASS TOO HOT FOR YOUNG BLUES

20TH JANUARY 1989

Everton had no answer to the class of Leicester City striker Paul Kitson when they were ousted from the FA Youth Cup 4-1 in last night’s third round replay at Filbert Street.

Kitson opened the scoring in the 15th minute, brilliantly setup two second half goals for John Blencowe and Jason Peake and then rounded off the home tally himself.

Everton did grab a first half equaliser when Leigh Cowlishaw forced the ball over in a goalmouth melee. And for half-an-hour after that, through the midfield promptings of Marcus Ebdon and Neil Sang, looked as if they were back in the game.

However there was imply no stopping Leicester after the break and by the time Cowlishaw ballooned the ball over the bar from close range and sub Michael McDonough brought a good save from the City keeper, the match was already lost.
