EASY FOR EVERTON

15TH NOVEMBER 1986

A hat trick from striker Gary Powell helped Everton to move smoothly into the second round of the FA Youth cup with a 5-0 victory over the North Eastern side Billingham Town at Goodison Park this afternoon.

Powell flicked home a 16th minute header from a Jimmy Carberry cross and added a superb second in the 49th minute when he swept past two tackles before ramming home a low cross shot.

As Billingham wilted Carberry shot Everton’s third in the 72nd minute and two minutes later Powell completed his treble with a far post header from John Ebbrell’s cross. With just two minutes remaining John Dodds made it 5-0

EVERTON CRASH

16TH DECEMBER 1986

Everton were bundled out of the FA Youth Cup last night when a lively, aggressive Hull City side beat them 3-1 in their second round replay at Goodison Park.

The teams drew the first clash 3-3 at Boothferry Park, but Everton never looked strong in the finishing department this time, though Gary Powell twice forced Gavin Kelly into full-length saves and laid on a 29th minute goal for Lee Elliott.

But Hull were already leading at that time from a somewhat fortuitous goal, a cross from Lee Jenkinson curling unexpectedly just inside the far post. Despite Elliott’s equaliser Hull were always dangerous on the break and as Everton powered forward non-stop in a determined victory bid it was Hull who got the goals through Mike Smith (52nd minute) and Dave Windass in injury time.
