Meanwhile, Everton’s last chance of winning a trophy this season vanished at White Hart lane last night, when their youngsters were beaten 4-0 by Spurs in the fifth round of the F.A. Youth Cup.

“It wasn’t too much of a surprise, although we were naturally disappointed.” said manager Howard Kendall.

“We knew Spurs had a very strong team which included several players from the F.A. School of Excellence, and they were simply a bit too strong for us.

“Unfortunately one of our lads, John Doolan, took a nasty knock on the leg and had to come off. He will be having X-rays on it today.”
