ROVERS’ YOUNGSTERS AR NOT OVERAWED
25th NOVEMBER 1967
Tranmere Rovers’ fans have another chance to run the rule over possible future first team men on Monday evening when their Youth side meet Everton Youth in a second round F.A. Youth Cup tie.
Tranmere will start the underdogs, but this should not worry them for the situation was the same when Bolton came to Birkenhead a few weeks ago in the first round and were defeated 2-0.
Everton will be able to call on about six or seven players with Central League experience, Tranmere on the other hand, have very few youths who have had experience in anything other than youth soccer. One exception is Trevor Storton who was in the senior line-up twice recently, and he is certain to give the youngsters a steadying influence.
A keen fight is in store, and there should be a good gate at Prenton Park.
How long can Tranmere go on relying on their good home record to keep them out of trouble? This is the question many fans are after yet another away defeat last week. Rovers have gained just three points so far during the current season with the half-way stage not far ahead.
The news that Rovers’ board has finalised plans for a new stand next season has been welcomed by loyal fans who have put up with far from comfortable facilities for many years. The Supporters Association has been asked to raise £20,000, about a third of the total cost.
It is hoped eventually that a stand stretching the whole length of the Car Park side will be erected, but this depends on the success of the side, and more important the support given.
Tranmere should not need a replay to dispose of Rochdale in the opening round of the F.A. Cup on December 9, but if it is necessary Rovers will go to Rochdale on the following Monday with an evening kick-off.

TEMPESTUOUS YOUTH GAME IS BEST FORGOTTEN
TUESDAY 28th NOVEMBER 1967
BY PAUL O’BRIEN
The kindest thing that can be said about last night’s F.A. Youth second round match at Prenton Park, in which Everton beat Tranmere Rovers 3-2, was that it was full of incident. Much of the incident came in the first 45 minutes, which produced five goals – and more free kicks than one would have seen in the entire competition not so many years ago.
It was a great surprise to Everton when their goalkeeper, Clarke, misjudged a free kick from right back Gilliard which enabled Tranmere to go in front on ten minutes: but an even bigger surprise for me was that referee Richards of Manchester was able to get through these 90 minutes without sending at least one player to the dressing rooms. He made do with bookings and cautions.
Everton must take the major blame for allowing the game to sink to such a level, for with seven players of this side which represented them on the competition last year, they had a tremendous advantage in experience.
The game was only a few minutes old when Everton’s left back Styles – who took over in goal after 37 minutes following an injury to Clarke – was involved in an incident with Tranmere’s outside right, England. The first half ended with another clash, this time involving Everton’s outside left, Johnson, and the Tranmere right back, Gilliard.
Apart from the goals, what went on in the 45 minutes between these incidents is best forgotten. Everton equalised through centre forward Owen after 24 minutes, following a free kick, and 5 minutes later a brilliant 50 yards run and close-range shot from Whittle, their inside right, put them in front.
WHITTLE’S WINNER
Centre half Storton came up field to put Tranmere on terms from the penalty spot two minutes later, but at 38 minutes Whittle got the winner with a fine right foot shot, again following a free kick.
Tranmere, with Dempsey working tremendously hard, fought gallantly against a fitter Everton side in a less tempestuous second half, but it was only in the closing minutes that they looked really dangerous. Then they found deputy goalkeeper Styles equal to anything they could offer.
Apart from Dempsey, left half Chesworth , Storton and goalkeeper Lewis showed most promise on the Tranmere side, while in the Everton team Whittle and Kenny deserve thanks for their reminders of how football should be played.
Sergeant defended well at times, and Brindle, as usual, worked tirelessly. Much steadier defence will be need, however, if Everton are to progress very far.
