BLOW FOR STARLETS

2ND JANUARY 1982

Chances were few and far between in Everton’s F.A. Youth Cup third round clash with Aston Villa at rain-swept Goodison Park. McCowat put a header over the Villa bar and shortly after this Walker foiled Everton with a fine interception when a link between Rimmer and Galloway looked promising.

When the Midlanders fought back Kerr picked up a free kick rebound and seemed certain to score until Steele denied him with a spectacular save. But the Midlanders went ahead after 41 minutes when winger Obi beat Steele with a powerful swerving shot from 25 yards.

Half-time: Everton Youth 0, Aston Villa 1.

YOUTH CUP EXIT

4TH JANUARY 1982

Everton went out of the F.A. Youth Cup when their third round clash at Goodison Park on Saturday saw Aston Villa take a deserved 2-0 victory. Forced to defend for most of the game, Everton trailed to a 41st minute Tony Obi goal, struck with pace and just the right amount of curve from 25 yards.

Keith Tierney was desperately unlucky not to put Everton level when he shot narrowly wide after a superb solo run, but after Mark Walters had struck the face of the Everton bar, Paul Kerr chipped the advancing Simon Steele with devastating accuracy to notch Villa’s second in the 83rd minute.
