WALSH SAVES BLUES

4TH JANUARY 1991

Goalkeeper Ian Walsh and striker Michael McDonough earned Everton a second crack at Manchester United after last night’s FA youth cup third round clash at Old Trafford ended in a 1-1 draw.

Acrobatic Walsh denied the young United side with three late saves to thwart goal-scorer Adrian Doherty, Mark Gordon and John Sharples.

When United finally got the ball past him, Dave Wilson one of four bookings for the Blues, kicked Les Potts’ shot off the line.

Walsh even managed to get a glove to Doherty’s 19th minute goal after the Northern Ireland international ran unchallenged on goal after Ian Jenkins had been dispossessed.

Then it was McDonough’s turn to come to the rescue.

Another defensive blunder, this time by Potts, let in McDonough and he raced 40 yards to score a carbon copy equaliser.

BLUES’ CUP STUNNER

11TH JANUARY 1991

Everton went out of the F.A. Youth Cup last night when beaten 2-1 by Manchester United in their third round replay at Goodison Park.

They suffered an early blow when Ryan Giggs shot United ahead after only five minutes.

But the Blues battled to draw level after 84 minutes through a Mike McDonough header, only to lose out to a swift counter punch when Peter Smith shot United’s winner virtually from the restart.
